Ports of Indiana joins national coalition
The Ports of Indiana has joined UnLock Our Jobs, a national organization supporting a comprehensive, permanent solution to prevent Asian carp from establishing a self-sustaining population in the Great Lakes. Some environmental groups have advocated closing the locks in the Chicago Area Waterway System, but UnLock Our Jobs argues such a move could cost the regional economy $4.7 billion over the next twenty years.
IU, Cook Launch Invention Website
Three organizations are partnering to create an online service to match inventors with companies looking to develop discoveries into commercial products. Indiana University's Pervasive Technology Institute, the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and Cook Medical have created http://www.i2iconnect.org to help inventors and technology transfer organizations find licensing partners.
Company to Test Vehicle Sensor at Camp Atterbury
An Indianapolis company will test a sensor system at Camp Atterbury in Bartholomew County that the military says could save soldiers' lives. Wolf Technical Services has received a $750,000 contract from the U.S. Army to finalize development of the system to detect unevenly loaded vehicles. The technology could help U.S. forces determine which vehicles could be concealing improvised explosive devices.
ExactTarget Continues to Study Brand-Consumer Relationship
A new study by Indianapolis-based ExactTarget Inc. suggests nearly 40 percent of consumers use Facebook and Twitter when it comes to gathering information about brands involved in email marketing. The result is from ExactTarget's Social Profile report, which is the third research brief in a series that examines how consumers interact with brands online.
Notre Dame Lands Federal Energy Grant
The U.S. Department of Energy has selected the University of Notre Dame for a $2.8 million grant to fund research into improving how the U.S. uses and produces energy. It is one of 43 projects throughout the country to be part of the department's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy program.
Biomet Q4 Loss Narrows
Warsaw-based Biomet Inc. is reporting a fiscal fourth quarter loss of $14.5 million, compared to a loss of $170.9 million for the same period a year earlier. The medical device maker is also reporting a 10 percent increase in sales. Today's earnings release follows reports the company is planning to expand its Warsaw headquarters.
INDATA Project to Host Tech Conference
The INDATA Project is preparing for its annual Assistive Technology Conference at the Indiana Convention Center later this month. The two-day event will feature devices and programs available to assist Hoosiers with disabilities.
Purdue TAP Organizing Energy Forum
Industrial owners, managers and operators are invited to an energy efficiency forum next month in Indianapolis. Purdue University's Technical Assistance Program is hosting the event August 10. Participants will learn about software tools and initiatives that can help companies reduce energy use and expenses for little or no cost.
