Alumni group connects Purdue to Silicon Valley
A group of Silicon Valley-based Purdue University alumni is looking to boost entrepreneurship at the school. The Silicon Valley Boiler Innovation Group is designed to connect venture capitalists, investors and mentors with Purdue students, faculty and graduates looking to launch startups. Co-chairman Tom Schroeder says the nonprofit is currently focusing on life sciences and information technology companies. He says Indiana's startup culture is "just emerging."
Innovation Challenge Winner Secures Funding
Indianapolis-based Diagnotes Inc. has closed on a $1 million round of funding. The investment group includes the Innovate Indiana Fund, Indiana Seed Fund II and Stepstone Angels. Diagnotes, which won last year's Hoosier Healthcare Innovation Challenge, is a health IT company.
Finalists Named in Taylor Business Plan Competition
Five finalists will pitch their ideas next month at Taylor University's Business Plan Competition. The top three plans will receive cash prizes and be offered loans to grow their businesses in Grant County.

Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group Inc. (NYSE: SPG) has hired Liz Zale as a senior vice president. She most recently served as senior vice president of investor relations for Nielsen Holdings NV. Zale will oversee corporate affairs and communications for Simon.
IU East Appoints Natural Science Dean
Indiana University East has named Neil Sabine dean of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics. He is an associate professor of biology and has served as interim dean since August 2011.
Celadon Reports Dip in Net Income
Indianapolis-based Celadon Group Inc. is reporting a fiscal third quarter profit of $4.4 million, compared to $5.7 million for the same period the previous year. Chief Executive Officer Paul Will says winter storms and "unusually high medical claims" contributed to the decrease.
