Former Indiana Secretary of Commerce Dan Hasler has been named president of the Purdue Research Foundation. He will also serve as the organization's chief entrepreneurial officer. Hasler spent more than 30 years at Eli Lilly and Co. and served as chief executive officer of the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

 

Expert: Sequester Turns Airlines Into 'Sitting Ducks'

The head of aviation technology at Purdue University says federally-mandated Federal Aviation Administration cutbacks under sequestration would be "one more nail in the coffin" of the airline industry. Brent Bowen says the possible cuts would likely lead to more delays and canceled flights as well as fewer options for passengers. He believes the potential changes would "smear the reputation" of airlines and lead to more travelers choosing not to fly. Bowen says the longer lawmakers take to act, the more long-term problems airlines will face.

 

Restaurant Chain Details Expansion

An Indianapolis-based Cajun restaurant chain is growing. Yats Inc., which has five Marion and Hamilton County locations, expects to open two more in Indianapolis within the next two weeks and its first in Columbus could open as early as June. Chief Executive Officer Gina Vuskovich tells Inside INdiana Business at least two additional company-owned stores and four more franchises could be on the horizon by year's end.

 

Ohio Company Moving Headquarters to Fremont

Ohio-based Koester Metals Inc. is planning to relocate its headquarters to an existing northeast Indiana facility and add jobs. The sheet metal manufacturer intends to invest $2.7 million to combine operations, update the Steuben County plant and hire nearly four dozen new employees by 2018.

 

State Parks to Host Job Fairs

Two Indiana state parks will host job fairs next week. Summit Lake State Park in New Castle and Mounds State Park in Anderson are looking to fill seasonal positions including gate attendants, maintenance and lifeguards.

 

South Bend Taking on 'Ambitious' Revitalization Plan

The mayor of South Bend is kicking off a major initiative aimed at addressing blight. Pete Buttigieg is calling for the city to deal with 1,000 vacant or abandoned houses in 1,000 days. The plans are outlined in a report that details a task force's demolition and rehabilitation recommendations.

 

CountryMark Part of National EPA Collaboration

Indianapolis-based CountryMark will make significant investments at its Mt. Vernon refinery as part of an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The company says it is part of a national review of more than 107 refineries the EPA has been conducting since 2000.

 

Work Truck Show Set For Return

A national trade show that expects to draw more than 10,000 to Indiana is set to begin next week. The 2013 NTEA Work Truck Show will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and feature more than 500 exhibitors, including over four dozen Hoosier companies.

 

Honda Cranks Out Milestone Vehicle

A major automaker in Indiana has reached a production benchmark. Honda Manufacturing of Indiana LLC's 500,000th vehicle has rolled off the lines in Greensburg.

 

Former Butler Coach Returning to School

Butler University has hired former football player and coach Ken LaRose as associate athletic director for development. He most recently served as a client liaison and community engagement specialist for Indianapolis-based Fanning Howey Inc.

 

College to Host Regional Tech Event

IUPUI is set to host hundreds of Midwest technology professionals in July. The annual meeting of The Association of University Technology Managers 2013 Central Region will discuss strategies for more quickly getting discoveries to market.
