A Bloomington winery owner says the region's new American Viticultural Area designation will help boost the state's wine and tourism industries. Butler Winery owner Jim Butler says the announcement can help develop awareness of the Indiana Uplands brand comparable to areas such as the Finger Lakes in New York. The designation means the federal government recognizes the region as an "area of significance" for grape growing. Butler says it is the latest sign of momentum in Indiana's wine industry.

 

Elkhart General Announces Major Expansion

Elkhart General Hospital is set to begin a $74 million expansion. The plan calls for adding nearly four dozen private rooms, 10 operating rooms and upgraded surgical technology. Construction is set to begin later this year and wrap up in 2015.

 

IU Establishing Stronger Presence in India

Indiana University has created its first international gateway office. The location near New Delhi will be a base for IU activities in India. The university says it is working on plans to open more facilities in areas of "global significance."

 

Manufacturer Adding Product Line

A Tippecanoe County employer plans to add jobs. Voestalpine Rotec Inc. says it will invest $1.4 million to produce air bag propellant tubes at its Lafayette operation. The company says the new product line will mean the addition of 10 workers.

 

Texas Racetrack Hires Former IMS Executive

Circuit of The Americas in Texas has hired a longtime former Indianapolis Motor Speedway executive to run its operations. Mel Harder will take the roles of senior vice president and general manager next month at the track which is the site of an F-1 race.

 

Pence Announces State Pay Raises

Gov. Mike Pence has announced pay raises for most state government employees. Workers who get a positive performance review will receive increases ranging from 3 to 8 percent. Pence's office says the state will spend approximately $38 million on the raises.

 

Marketing Officer Leaving Purdue

The chief marketing officer at Purdue University is headed west. Teri Thompson has been named senior vice president for university relations at the University of Arizona.

 

Partnership Releases 'Dynamics Report'

A new report suggests 2012 was a "very good year" for capital investment and job creation in northeast Indiana. The annual Business Dynamics Report from the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership and Community Research Institute at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne shows 120 business expansions in the region last year resulting in more than 3,000 jobs.

 

Henry Seeks Riverfront Development Proposals

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry is set to announce details this afternoon of a request for proposals for a Riverfront Development Study. It is the first project using Legacy Fund dollars from the light lease deal with Indiana Michigan Power.

 

Mayor Touts South Bend's 'Strong' Fiscal Health

The mayor of South Bend has detailed the city's financial picture. Pete Buttigieg says a "AA" credit rating by Standard & Poor's is top among second class cities in Indiana. In an address to the Common Council Monday, he added that revenues outpaced expenses during his first year in office.

 

Support For Veteran Jobs Plan Unifies House Leaders

Indiana House leaders are crossing the aisle to show support for a military-focused amendment in the proposal to create the Indiana Career Council. The bill, championed by House Speaker Brian Bosma and Minority Leader Scott Pelath, includes a provision for the council to seek input from veterans and military organizations.

 

Purdue Announces Food And Agribusiness Chair

Purdue University has named an endowed chair in food and agribusiness. Agricultural economics professor Allan Gray has been named to the post, which is being partially funded through a $750,000 donation from the Land O'Lakes Foundation. Purdue is matching that amount.
