The head of a coalition pushing for a stronger mass transit system in Indianapolis says the city is "absolutely behind" its competitors. Indy Connect Now Executive Director Ron Gifford says cities such as Charlotte, Minneapolis and Phoenix are able to advertise stronger systems when competing for jobs. He will lead a group of supporters during a public hearing this afternoon on a bill seeking a public referendum on mass transit funding. Evansville Moves Forward on Proposed Convention Hotel

The city of Evansville has taken a major step toward building a much anticipated downtown convention hotel. The city's redevelopment commission has voted in favor of opening negotiations with a Missouri-based developer. HCW Development LLC was selected over two other companies. Mayor Lloyd Winnecke says the hotel would act as a catalyst for further development.

 

State Sets Meetings For Area Code Proposal

The state has scheduled a series of public meetings to gather input on a possible additional area code in southern Indiana. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission plans to hold the first of 10 hearings in March in Terre Haute.

 

Indiana Dog Trainers Get Reality TV Show

An Indiana-based kennel business and its police dog training program are stepping into the national spotlight. Denver-based Vohne Liche Kennels will be featured in a reality TV series that starts airing next month on Nat Geo Wild. The show's website says episodes will focus on the training methods at the Miami County business.

 

Accuride Planning $30 Million in Upgrades

Evansville-based Accuride Corp is planning a major investment to upgrade some of its operations. The $30 million in improvements would focus on its steel wheel facilities and get underway next year.

 

Fort Wayne, Aqua Reach Tentative Agreement

The dispute between Aqua Indiana and the city of Fort Wayne could be nearing conclusion. Our partners at Indiana's NewsCenter report a tentative agreement between the two sides has been reached. Mayor Tom Henry announced plans earlier this year to condemn the utility, saying customers would save money if they were switched to city water.

 

LIDS Announces Super Bowl Plans

Indianapolis-based LIDS Sports Group is partnering with the National Football League to sell merchandise throughout New Orleans leading up to Super Bowl XLVII. The retailer will be part of the primary 30,000 square-foot NFL SHOP and manage stores in other locations, including the French Quarter.

 

Rose-Hulman Approaches Application Milestone

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology says it is approaching the 5,000 application mark for first-year students seeking to enroll for the 2013-2014 academic year. The school says the record numbers include a 74 percent increase in international applications.

 

Grant to Fund Church Music Program

The University of Notre Dame says a $1.9 million grant from Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc. will allow the school to teach church music to a new generation. Sacred Music at Notre Dame will use the funding to send graduate students to local churches to help establish and improve children's choirs.

 

Henry Sets State of The City

The mayor of Fort Wayne has set the date for his annual State of the City address. Tom Henry is planning to hold the presentation next month at the Allen County Public Library.

 

IU Kelley Professor to Lead Management Society

Indiana University Kelley School of Business Professor Marjorie Lyles has been named president of the Strategic Management Society. She will be the first female president in the international organization's 33-year history.
