The president of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce says neighboring states are stepping up their economic development efforts, and Indiana must not "rest on its laurels." Kevin Brinegar says the state "stands out negatively" when it comes to taxing business machinery and equipment. In our INside The Statehouse segment, he says Ohio and Illinois do not impose that tax, and Michigan is phasing it out. Members of the Indiana House could vote on a bill addressing the issue today.

 

Home Sales Jump in January

The Indiana Association of Realtors is reporting a 23 percent increase in January closed home sales, compared to a year earlier. The association says the average and median sales prices also went up. President Kevin Kirkpatrick says affordability throughout the state remains "extremely attractive" even though interest rates are moving higher.

 

River Ridge Aiming For More Employers

More development could be coming to the River Ridge Commerce Center in Jeffersonville. The News and Tribune reports the River Ridge Development Authority has approved resolutions to help move initiatives known as "Project Maverick" and "Blue Beacon" forward.

 

Society to Deliver 'Japan Update'

An annual conference focusing on Indiana's business relationship with Japan is set for this week in Indianapolis. The Japan-America Society of Indiana says Wednesday's event will feature comments by the Consulate General of Japan at Chicago, the director of the Center for Automotive Research and former Senator Richard Lugar.

 

Fort Wayne Looks to Boost Youth Sports Efforts

Fort Wayne is seeking proposals for a study on how to turn the city into a regional and national youth sports destination. The research is part of the Legacy Fort Wayne initiative and will evaluate the community's sports facilities and marketing efforts.

 

Services Planned For Corn Marketing Leader

The state's agricultural community is mourning the loss of Indiana Corn Marketing Council President Gary Lamie of Tippecanoe County. Visitation is set for Tuesday and funeral services are planned for Wednesday in Lafayette. Lamie was 52.

 

BioCrossroads Maps Indiana's Life Sciences Sector

Indiana's life sciences initiative has put together maps highlighting the $50 billion dollar industry. BioCrossroads says the mapping effort shows the location and employment levels of the 50 largest life sciences companies in Indiana.

 

Participants Sought For Lafayette Job Fair

Greater Lafayette Commerce is looking for employers and applicants to take part in its upcoming career fair. The event is a collaboration among GLC, WorkOne West Central and Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
