Berry Plastics Group Inc. has announced plans to expand operations in Vanderburgh County and create up to 115 jobs by the end of the year. The company says it will invest approximately $33 million to equip an Evansville facility to manufacture a new food packaging product. Chief Executive Officer Jon Rich hopes the innovation is the "first in a family" of such products leading to further growth.

 

Indiana POET Plants Producing Corn Oil

The four POET LLC plants in Indiana are producing corn oil. The facilities in Alexandria, Cloverdale, North Manchester and Portland are among 25 POET biorefineries making the oil to meet "strong demand" in the biodiesel and feed markets.

 

Anderson Mounting a Comeback

Two jobs announcements are helping build momentum in an Indiana city. Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith says the community once dubbed the "engineering capital" of General Motors Company (NYSE: GM) is taking a global approach to its economic rebound. The city recently attracted jobs from Japan-based Keihin North America and Greenville Technology Inc., which will cut the ribbon on a multi-million dollar facility this afternoon. In an interview airing this weekend on Inside INdiana Business Television, Smith says overseas companies are finding it "advantageous" to invest in the American Midwest.

 

Intermodal Facility 'Huge' For Economic Development

A new central Indiana intermodal facility is being hailed as a "game changer" for Indiana companies and economic development efforts. Canadian National Railway Co. (NYSE: CNI) and Indiana Rail Road Co. announced a deal Wednesday that will result in construction of a new facility at an existing rail terminal near Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis. The rail companies say it will save shippers money and time, bypassing Chicago and allowing for more direct access to global markets. New Life For Indy Logistics Park Plans

A proposed $120 million logistics park in Indianapolis that had been delayed because of the recession may be back on track. The metropolitan development commission in Indianapolis is expected to approve a two-year tax abatement extension for a project known as World Connect. South Bend-based Holladay Properties Inc. Senior Vice President Chris Wilkes says when the economy "trended back up" last year, the developer decided to move forward. He says the logistics sector has room to grow in Indiana.

 

Ellspermann Fills Out Remaining Team

Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann has finalized her executive office team. She filled eight positions yesterday, including Legislative Director Ryan Heater and Press Secretary Tyler Stock. Ellspermann previously appointed Tonya Brothers-Bridge chief of staff and Senior Advisor David Terrell.

 

Indiana Hospitals Among Nation's Elite

A health care information provider has ranked 10 Indiana hospitals among the top 5 percent in the nation for clinical performance. Healthgrades says they are in a class of more than 260 throughout the country to earn the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence. Several hospitals in Indianapolis were joined on the list by Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana University Health Arnett in Lafayette and Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.

 

Daniels Goes to Work at Purdue

Mitch Daniels has completed his first week as president of Purdue University. During a recent interview on Inside INdiana Business Television, Daniels said there is still a "huge upside" to Purdue's continuing role in the state's economic development efforts. He said he is open to more public-private collaboration in the state, including the "genius that's in our research institutions."
