INSIDE INDIANA BUSINESS WEEK IN REVIEW: OrthoWorx says potential hospital a 'bold, ambitious plan'

The head of Indiana's orthopedics initiative says a potential specialty hospital in Kosciusko County would benefit the entire state. OrthoWorx Chief Executive Officer David Floyd says an orthopedic hospital would be a significant asset for researchers at the state's universities. The organization is conducting a feasibility study on the project.

 

Parkview Adding on to New Hospital

Parkview Regional Medical Center intends to pump an additional $14 million in its new hospital, which is set to open next month. A build–out is planned on two floors and will include nearly 50 more beds. Most of the additional space is expected to be completed this spring.

 

Indy's Super Bowl Tests 'Urban Model'

While Indianapolis' compact, connected downtown has made it a favorite for events like the NCAA Final Four, it represents a new experience for a Super Bowl. Indianapolis is hosting what has been billed as "the most urban Super Bowl ever," and the results could give the NFL a new model for the mega event. 2012 Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee Chairman Mark Miles says he's doesn't think there are too many places in the country that could replicate the concept.

 

FDA Approves Lilly Diabetes Drug

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a diabetes drug developed by Eli Lilly and Co. The drugmaker says Jentadueto combines two blood sugar treatments into one pill.

 

Schnitzelbank, Jasper Share Spotlight

A family–owned restaurant from southern Indiana is in the statewide spotlight. The Schnitzelbank Restaurant won the Indiana Office of Tourism Development's Super 46 Sandwich contest by gathering the most online votes. The restaurant is a Jasper institution, being around for more than five decades.

 

 

Chamber: Right–to–Work 'Distinguishes' Indiana

Indiana Chamber of Commerce President Kevin Brinegar says the state's new right–to–work law is the latest advancement to Indiana's already–attractive business climate. Brinegar says the measure, which Governor Mitch Daniels signed Wednesday afternoon, gives companies another reason to bring their business and jobs to the state.

 

AFL–CIO: Right–to–Work Will be 'Short Lived'

Indiana State AFL–CIO President Nancy Guyott says Indiana lawmakers gave the "wrong answer to the most important question of this generation" when they approved right–to–work. Guyott says the organization will work to repeal the new law and defeat legislators who supported it.

 

 

Children's Museum Receives Top Ranking

There are more accolades for The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Forbes Contributor Larry Olmstead has ranked it at the top of the 12 best children's museums in the country. He says "families could easily spend two days exploring this Indianapolis behemoth."

 

 

Cummins Reports Record Yearly Profit

Columbus–based Cummins Inc. says 2011 was its best year ever, with a record profit of $1.85 billion. Cummins is also reporting a 51 percent jump in fourth quarter net income, compared to the same period the previous year.

 

 

Lilly Revenue, Profit Down on Patent Expirations

Indianapolis–based Eli Lilly and Co. is reporting fourth quarter net income of $858.2 million, down from more than $1.1 billion during the same quarter last year. Chief Executive Officer John Lechleiter says the numbers are due in large part to patent expirations, including the top–selling antipsychotic medication Zyprexa and chemotherapy drug Gemzar.
