Trucking company plans training center

The founder of Indianapolis-based Celadon Group Inc. says a discussion about finding jobs for a large number of returning troops was the catalyst for a planned $5.3 million training center. Steve Russell tells Inside INdiana Business the conversation with Adjutant General of Indiana Martin Umbarger led to developing a training school. He says the initiative has grown to cater to all new drivers' needs. Russell says the center will fill a significant need.

 

Speaker proposes Indiana Career Council

House Speaker Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis, has introduced a bill to create an Indiana Career Council. The panel would help coordinate the state's educational, job skills and career training systems. House Minority Leader Scott Pelath, D-Michigan City, is one of the co-authors of the bill.

 

Ivy Tech reports higher spring enrollment

Ivy Tech Community College says spring semester enrollment has increased 4 percent, compared to the same period last year. The college says nearly 120,000 students were registered for Monday's first day of classes. It also reports an 82 percent jump in spring enrollment since 2005.

 

Indiana cities rise in 'Best Performing' rankings

Several Hoosier communities are improving in an annual ranking of the country's "Best-Performing Cities." California-based think tank the Milken Institute rates the 200 largest metro areas based on job, wage and technology performance.

 

Publication ranks Roche Diagnostics among 'Best Places'

Indianapolis-based Roche Diagnostics Corp. has been named as one of FORTUNE magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For." It is the only Indiana-based company on this year's list.

 

Former BrightPoint exec joins Angie's List

Indianapolis-based Angie's List has named former BrightPoint President Mark Howell its next COO. He has served in several senior executive roles with BrightPoint and its parent company, Ingram Micro Inc. Howell is expected to begin in March.

 

Hologic details Indy closure plans

Massachusetts-based Hologic Inc. says it will begin laying off employees at the end of March as part of a plan to close its Indianapolis facility. In a notice to the state, the women's health device maker says it will let go a total of 140 employees and shut down the location by this summer.

 

South Bend clinic acquired

Indiana University Health Occupational Services has acquired Wipperman Occupational Health in South Bend. Wipperman currently employs 16 staff members.

 

Federal judge to join Indiana Tech

Indiana Tech Law School will add a U.S. bankruptcy judge to its faculty. Judith Klaswick Fitzgerald plans to retire from the bench in Pittsburgh this summer and then will join the staff. The school is set to hold its first classes in August.

 

Thor Industries hires CFO

Thor Industries Inc., which plans to move its headquarters to Elkhart later this year, has named Dominic Romeo CFO. Romeo most recently served in a similar role at Illinois-based IDEX Corp.

 

City set for robotics championship

Dozens of high school robotics teams are making final preparations for this weekend's Indianapolis VEX Robotics City Championship. Mayor Greg Ballard says the event provides inspiration for competitors to move toward science, technology, engineering and math fields.
