Infiniti’s Performance Line dusts off fall pavement with the 2012 Infiniti G37 IPL Coupe.

Nissan’s premium division Infiniti revs the Infiniti Performance Line with a platform borrowed from the Nissan 370Z sports car.

Under IPL’s hood breaths a 3.7-liter, V6 engine tuned to generate a spirited 348 horsepower tacked to a rear-wheel drivetrain for exceptional handling and balance.

Buyers have choice of a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission.

The manual gearbox model achieves fuel economy of 17 miles per gallon/city and 25-mpg/highway. A G37 IPL equipped with an automatic transmission ups the ante with two miles per gallon better city/highway mileage across the board.

Premium fuel is recommended by the manufacturer for optimum performance.

Outside aesthetics include dual chrome exhaust tips, rear spoiler, sculpted side sills and 19-inch seven-spoke graphite-finish alloy wheels mounted on low-profile performance tires.

Use of winter tires on all four wheels makes the mid-size G37 IPL a year-round performer.

Inside, the IPL harbors a flat instrument panel that features bold, easy-to-read numerals fixed on a dual gauge cluster backlit with white illumination.

Connections for iPods and other portable electronics are found in the center console arm rest between the cockpit’s form-fitted bucket seats.

One rub is the location of the standard push start button masked from view by the power tilt and telescoping steering wheel. The leather wrapped wheel also is home to cruise control and secondary audio controls.

The 2012 Infiniti G37 IPL Coupe is donned with special aluminum trim along the dash, door pulls and center console. Aluminum pedals add to the racy feel.

Four occupants are greeted by leather seats accented with red stitching. Both front buckets come powered. Driver’s 12-way and front passenger’s eight-way adjustments customize the low-slug seat position.

Second-row seats accommodate two passengers that span the growing spectrum from toddler to adolescent. Most adults do not fit in the rear quarters as the car's tapered roofline makes headroom tight.

When unoccupied, the second-row backrest folds flat into the cabin to expand the coupe’s 7.4 cubic-foot trunk capacity.

Infiniti continues its IPL expansion with the introduction of the G37 IPL hardtop convertible this fall as a 2013 model, opening new performance prowess to top-down touring.

The 2012 Infiniti G37 IPL Coupe with six-speed manual lists for $49,350. Add freight and an automatic transmission and the price jumps to $51,250.
