The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion seeks to improve American health through dietary information and general guidance.
In doing so, the center maintains an interesting website, worth a special look by consumers.
The website is found at www.cnpp.usda.gov.
Along with providing information on American dietary guidelines and general nutrition, the center’s website includes MyFoodapedia, which offers easy access to general information on the food groups and calories, and allows a comparison of food choices.
Consumers can compare over 8,000 foods at MyFoodapedia.
For example, if you want information on the nutritional differences between a double hamburger and a double bacon cheeseburger, you can enter the foods and receive a side-by-side comparison. The comparison offers information on such things as total calories, “empty calories,” solid fats, added sugar calories, saturated fat, sodium, etc.
The website includes SuperTacker, which allows individuals to develop a personalized nutrition and physical activity plan. Included are weight management guidance and personalized reports on how you are meeting goals.
Also, the site offers a Cost of Raising a Child Calculator. The calculator provides a general estimate of the annual costs associated with raising children, including a breakdown on such budgetary items as housing, food, transportation, clothing, health care. Of course, only a generalized estimate is provided; actual individual costs will vary.
