If you are planning a long trip over the holidays, you may benefit from the U.S. Department of Energy’s “My Trip Calculator” (located at www.fueleconomy.gov).
Just as with other trip calculators online, the DOE site provides an estimate of the recommended route to take to your destination and the approximate miles you will travel.
In addition, the DOE site provides an estimate of the gas you will use on the trip and the fuel cost to your destination.
This added value is accomplished by entering the year, make and model of your vehicle (with some select options as well). An average price of gas is entered automatically into the calculator, or the user can customize the gas price by entering an alternate price.
If you have multiple vehicles to choose from for a trip, you can enter data for up to three vehicles and compare the gas you would use and overall estimated fuel cost for your trip for each vehicle.
A separate “Fuel Savings Calculator” is available at the same site as well.
The fuel savings calculator estimates the fuel cost to operate a vehicle annually and during the time you plan to own the car. It also allows for the comparison of the estimated cost of gasoline for two vehicles, side-by-side.
