GARY | The Lake County Minority Health Coalition and Indiana Minority Health Coalition will host a town hall meeting about the Affordable Care Act.

The meeting will last from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Gary Ivy Tech campus, 1440 E. 35th Ave.

Elected officials and representatives from local medical, health care and related organizations will discuss concerns Hoosiers are facing in health care reform.

Holiday concert tickets on sale

LAPORTE | Tickets for the 19th annual LaPorte Hospital Foundation Holiday at the POPS go on sale today.

The philanthropic concert takes place Dec. 14 at the LaPorte Civic Auditorium, 1001 Ridge St.

Main floor tables sell out quickly, so interested attendees are encouraged to purchase tickets at as soon as possible.

Proceeds benefit the foundation’s VNA Fund, which supports Indiana University Health LaPorte VNA Services and other philanthropic health care needs in the community.

The concert features a variety of local talent including the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, directed by Philip Bauman. Entertainment will also be provided by guest artists including Shania Povlock, vocalist; Cripple Creek, vocal ensemble; Illumination, chorus; and Sarah Gartshore, vocalist.

Restaurant to host fundraiser

SCHERERVILLE | A fundraiser that will benefit an Illinois children's hospital is set for Sunday at Schoop's, 136 U.S. 30.

A portion of proceeds generated by those who dine at the hamburger restaurant between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. will be donated to the Pediatric Rehabilitation and Development Department at Advocate Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn.

The fundraiser is being organized by the family of Gage Webber, a Schererville boy born July 11, 2011, with pulmonary atresia, a congenital heart disease in which the pulmonary valve is closed. His life-saving open heart procedure took place at the children's hospital, and the family wants to give back to the cardiac department by organizing the fundraiser.

Applications due today for basic EMT course

VALPARAISO | Porter Emergency Medical Services will offer an Emergency Medical Technician – Basic Course (EMT-B) beginning Nov. 4 and lasting through May 28.

The class will be presented on Mondays, Wednesdays and an occasional Saturday, from 5-9 p.m. at EMS Station 2, 2206 LaPorte Ave. The cost is $900, which includes a text book, shirt and assessment kit, and must be paid in full by Oct. 10.

The completed course application must be received by today. Completed applications may be mailed to Dale Lanham, EMT-P, EMS Coordinator, 2206 LaPorte Ave., Valparaiso, Indiana 46383.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old by April 1 and must undergo a 10-pantel drug screen and background check prior to patient contact.
