MUNSTER | A free course about diabetic foot care is scheduled for Sept. 5 at Franciscan Hammond Clinic Specialty Center, 7905 Calumet Ave.

The class, Diabetes and the Foot, will last from 6 to 7:30 p.m. It will focus on ways to prevent diabetic foot problems and will address questions about diabetic foot conditions.

Physicians join Porter system

Porter Health Care System announced the addition of four physicians to the hospital network, Porter Physician Group.

The new physicians are Dr. Alex Alvarez, who will practice family medicine at DeMotte Physicians, 520 8th Ave. NE, Demotte; Dr. Shane Bush, who will practice family medicine at Portage Medical Group, 3630 Willowcreek Road, Portage; Dr. Matthew Provenzano, an ear, nose and throat doctor who will practice at Associated ENT Specialists, 2802 Leonard Drive, Valparaiso; and Dr. Annabel Yuen, who will practice family medicine at Westchester Medical Group, 650 Dickinson Road, Chesterton.

 

Heart Cart screenings planned 

LAPORTE | The Heart Cart will visit LaPorte, Marshall and Starke counties to offer discounted cardiovascular screening to interested residents.

The screening tests for abnormal heart rhythm, abdominal aortic aneurysm, blood pressure, fasting cholesterol and glucose levels, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, poor leg circulation, stroke and weight.

Participants also may schedule a Vertical Auto-Profile cholesterol screening for an extra $39.

Heart Cart visits include the following: 7:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 6 at IU Health Medical Offices at LifeWorks Business Park, 3777 Frontage Road, Suite 500, Michigan City; 7:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 10 at IU Health Starke Hospital, 102 E. Culver Road, second floor conference room, Knox; and 7:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 17 at IU Health La Porte Heart & Vascular Center, 901 Lincolnway, Suite 103, La Porte.

The fee is $50 for tests normally costing more than $1,200. Participants may pay by cash, check, money order or credit card.

To offer the service at a discount to the community, IU Health does not bill insurance for the services. Participants are responsible for payment in full.

The screenings are provided in part by the La Porte Hospital Foundation. 

Advanced registration is required and can be made by calling (800) 235-6204, ext. 2626, or (219) 326-2626. Space is limited.

 

Pneumonia program is Sept. 5

VALPARAISO | Porter Regional Hospital will host a Sept. 5 community wellness program about influenza and pneumonia.

Join Dr. Douglas Mazurek, a pulmonologist, and Julia Rogers, a nurse practitioner, to learn more about preventing and treating the flu and pneumonia.

The event will be at 6 p.m. in the Community Room at Porter Regional Hospital, 85 E. U.S. Highway 6.
