The class will focus on the three basic calorie nutrients in food: protein, carbs and fat. Carb counting can help in planning more balanced meals, achieving blood glucose control and assisting with weight loss.

Free diabetes, blood pressure screenings offered in Gary
GARY | Community HealthNet is participating in the national campaign, Take a Loved One to the Doctor, which urges Americans to take their health more seriously by going to a health care professional for a check-up.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 18, an open house will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the construction of the health center's main location, 1021 W. Fifth Ave. Free preventive health screenings for diabetes and blood pressure will be available.
The health campaign was launched in 2002 by the federal Office of Minority Health. The goal is to encourage people to take charge of their health by visiting a health professional, making an appointment for a visit, attending a health event in the community or helping a friend, neighbor or family member do the same.
Caregiver support group will meet Jan. 20 at Dyer hospital
DYER | A support group that encompasses Alzheimer’s, dementia, cancer, stroke and other adult care responsibilities is open to family and friends who are looking for compassion and to share information.
The next meeting is scheduled Jan. 20.
The group is affiliated with Alzheimer’s Services of Northern Indiana, which provides such services as a 24-hour hotline, grants and periodic workshops.
The group meets at 2 p.m. at Franciscan St. Margaret Health hospital in Dyer, in the west entrance behind the St. Francis statue off U.S. 30.

Hospital to host bereavement support series at LaPorte site
LAPORTE | Indiana University Health LaPorte VNA Services will host a free bereavement support group series.
Moving from Grief to Hope and Healing will take place every Wednesday in January. The meetings will last from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at First Church of God, 2020 E. Lincolnway, LaPorte. The hospice chaplain facilitates the group.
Those who have experienced a recent loss or are unable to work through their grief are welcome to attend. The support group focuses on the grieving process and offers the support of others undergoing a similar experience.
The group is confidential and informal. Attendees are provided the opportunity to speak or simply listen and offer support through sharing of experiences and coping strategies. It is free to attend, but registration is required. To register, call (800) 854-6008.
