Doctor accepts new patients
WESTVILLE | Primary care physician Dr. Shaily Macker recently joined Indiana University Health LaPorte Physicians and is accepting patients at her Westville practice.
Macker is board certified in family medicine and completed her family practice residency at Akron General Hospital in Ohio.

Kids' health focus of event
SCHERERVILLE | The Maternal Child Health Network will host its annual perinatal disparities conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at The Halls of St. George, 905 E. Joliet St.
The focus is on safe sleep practices and preventing child abuse.
The group is a volunteer network dedicated to reducing health disparities, specifically those related to infant mortality and improving birth outcomes, especially in minority populations in Lake County.

Funds will combat disorder
HIGHLAND | A fundraising walk to benefit Conquer Chiari is scheduled for noon Sept. 21 at Wicker Park, 2000 Ridge Road.
Chiari malformation is a neurological disorder in which the bottom part of the brain — the cerebellum — descends out of the skull and crowds the spinal cord, putting pressure on both the brain and spine.
A minimum donation of $25 is suggested. Registration begins at 10 a.m. the day of the walk, but participants are asked to register online at www.conquerchiari.org.

Weight loss program offered
FLOSS MOOR | Introductory sessions for Healthy Lifestyles Weight Management, a 12-week weight loss program for adults who want to improve their health and increase physical activity, are at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at Ingalls Family Care Center.
Weekly group classes are led by a registered dietitian. The introductory sessions are free at Ingalls, 19550 Governors Highway, Suite 2400.
The 12-week session fee is $225. Classes will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. or 6 to 7:30 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays, beginning Aug. 29 and ending Nov. 14.
