HARVEY | Ingalls Memorial Hospital was recently presented with the 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer.

Ingalls is one of 79 U.S. health care facilities with accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor for surveys performed last year. 

The cancer program was evaluated on 29 program standards categorized within one of the following areas: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services and quality improvement. It was further evaluated on eight commendation standards.

“This achievement is a testament to the outstanding work of our doctors, nurses and other professionals who provide the highest level of cancer care for our patients and their families every day," said Kurt E. Johnson, president and CEO of Ingalls Health System. 


Center to offer free dental exams 

LAPORTE | Indiana University Health La Porte Dental Center is offering free dental exams to children with no dental insurance.

Exams are offered by appointment between 2 and 6 p.m. Wednesday and Aug. 7 and 14; 8 to 10 a.m. Aug. 5, 6, 8 or 9, at 400 Teegarden St.

The exam meets the requirements of the La Porte Community School Corp. The La Porte Hospital Foundation provided funding.

The center provides dental care to children and adults with low income and no dental insurance. It accepts Medicaid patients. It operates through the support of IU Health La Porte Hospital, grants through the Indiana State Department of Health and the foundation.

Methodist hires new neurologist

MERRILLVILLE | Methodist Hospitals has hired Dr. Arif Dalvi, a neurologist who specializes in Parkinson's disease and movement disorders.

Dalvi is a clinical associate professor of neurology at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. He is board certified in neurology and psychiatry.

He has been working more than 15 years in areas of deep brain stimulation and nerve factors for Parkinson's, and he has worked on clinical trials of many of the recently FDA-approved drugs for Parkinson's disease. Dalvi also is a psychiatrist and pastor and has earned an MBA degree.

He came to Methodist from Northshore University Health System in Chicago.


Hospital offers skin cancer screenings

LAPORTE | Indiana University Health will offer free skin cancer screenings to the public in August at a variety of locations in LaPorte and Starke counties.

The screenings are not recommended for people who have seen a dermatologist within the last three years. Advance registration is required and can be made by calling (219) 326-2073.

Upcoming screenings include the following times: 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 12 at 402 W. Culver Road, Knox; 11:30 a.m. to noon and 4  to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at Founders Square, 1509 State St., LaPorte; and 8:30  to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 14 at 156 Flynn Road, Westville.
