VALPARAISO | Life Care Center of The Willows will host a free presentation July 11 about the sugar hidden in common foods.
Joan Garwick, a registered nurse at the facility, will share how sugary substances can affect your health and risk for diabetes. The presentation is set for 6 to 7:15 p.m. at the center, 1000 Elizabeth Drive.

Insurance counselors needed
HIGHLAND | State Health Insurance Assistance Program counselors are needed to provide free, objective and confidential counseling to people with Medicare.
Those who feel a need to help people with health insurance problems and have basic Internet skills can become a SHIP counselor. Training will be provided.
The next four-day training session for new SHIP volunteers will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11 and 12 and July 19 and 20. Training will take place at St. James the Less Church, 9640 Kennedy Ave.

Classes focus on diabetes
CROWN POINT | Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Crown Point will offer a series of diabetes courses on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in July and August.
Classes will help provide participants with individual meal plans designed to meet specific needs, along with information in accordance with the American Diabetes Association standards.
Sessions will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays. There are four sessions for each class. Tuesday classes begin July 9 and Aug. 13. Wednesday classes begin July 10 and Aug. 14. They will take place weekly each month in the Burrell classrooms, which are located on the hospital’s lower level.
Registration is required.
Program fees are covered by most insurance companies. Those who are interested should check before calling. Medicare A and B covers a series of classes once and individual appointments yearly, if needed, after classes. For more information, including fees, and registration, call (219) 757-6268.
Wellness programs planned
VALPARAISO | Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Michael Leland will discuss chronic hip pain at an upcoming presentation and help participants learn if they are candidates for hip replacement surgery.
The discussion will take place at 6 p.m. July 9 at Strongbow Inn, 2405 U.S. 30 in Valparaiso.
In addition, Family Medicine Physician Dr. Michael Mirochna will discuss sports-related concussions, explaining the physician’s role in diagnosing, treating and returning athletes to play.
His presentation will take place at 6 p.m. July 17 in the Community Room at Porter Regional Hospital, 85 East U.S. Highway 6.
