The Times Media Co. is making changes to its website to require a subscription for full access to online content.
The move recognizes the growing importance of digital news platforms such as tablets and smartphones, while maintaining The Times tradition of providing highly relevant local news to readers, according to Times Publisher Chris White.
"People are counting on us not only to be the best news source for everything that happened yesterday, but also to be providing breaking news on a 24-hour basis," White said.
The Times' daily online readership is now approaching that of its newspaper, White said. Digital readership is expected to surpass print circulation in the next nine months.
"There has really never been a better time to be in the newspaper business, because today we reach more people than we have ever reached before," White said.
Customers subscribing to The Times newspaper now have Full Access to all Times Media Co. digital products available through the Web, mobile, smartphone, tablet and print. Their new digital accounts can be activated online at nwi.com/activate.
Customers in The Times home-delivery territory also will have the option of subscribing to just the digital products for $10 per month, with home delivery of the Sunday newspaper included. Subscribers outside The Times delivery area can get the same digital subscription, but without the Sunday newspaper.
Non-subscribers going to nwi.com will be prompted to pay for extended use of digital content after viewing 10 online pages in one month.
The new Full Access to all products is being introduced through a "Connect me Local" campaign with weekly iPad Air tablet giveaways for customers who activate digital accounts between June 10 and July 22.
