Promoting achievements

Q: I earned an award for my online forum contributions. Is that worth noting on resumes and online profiles?

A: It might be.

PRO: Think about the employers you're targeting. Will it impress them? If so, explain briefly how it sets you apart. For example, you could state that you received the award over a certain number of competitors. Should the online forum be little-known, promote it while you promote yourself. Describe it concisely and squeeze in something about the site's popularity/traffic/longevity, etc. - whatever you think employers will like.

CON: Take a poll of people in your field to see whether they consider the award significant. Don't mention it if they don't. Save it for an interview, if relevant.

Are the results of your poll split? Think about each employer you're approaching. The ones most likely to be impressed would probably have a strong online presence and be very active in social media, not just talking about it.

If changing resumes for this one point seems complicated, mention it in the cover letter, where applicable.

CAVEAT

Q: Before taking my LPN exam, I met with the State Board of Nursing over my DUI and shoplifting convictions. They did approve me but told me it would be up to the nursing facility to hire me. The Board has to note the problems on my (permanent) license record. Several nursing homes have rejected me because of this.

How can a facility deny me employment when they have nurses with greater or lesser convictions? Nurses all over have this problem. I did jail time for both incidents and was ordered to pay a fine and restitution. I feel as if I'm being discriminated against and on trial again.

My previous work experience was related to my nursing career. I was a CNA, pharmacy tech and medication aide. My passion is for nursing. It's all I've ever wanted to do.

A: Did nurses with your convictions receive them where they're currently employed after they'd developed trust?

Today's market is highly selective. Learn from other nurses with convictions how they landed jobs. In the meantime, keep hunting in all kinds of facilities. Get someone to call a potential employer and introduce you. Convince one employer of your sincerity.
