A panel of economists will deliver their latest update on the health of Northwest Indiana's economy on April 29 at Harre Union at Valparaiso University.

"Northwest Indiana: Regional Economic Trends and Opportunities" is an effort undertaken by economists from several area colleges and universities to gather comprehensive data on the local economy. It is now in its second year.

“Reporting on the same statistics regularly helps identify trends and opportunities so that leaders in Northwest Indiana can better apply our available economic development resources," said Don Babcock, director of economic development at NIPSCO.

The panel of economists will gather at Harre Union to release its findings on topics such as economic growth, the gross regional product, industry trends and the quality of local jobs. The last such event was attended by a large number of businesspeople, government leaders and academics.

The economists come from Indiana University Northwest, Ivy Tech Community College, Purdue University Calumet, Purdue University North Central and Valparaiso University.

At the first-ever release of the comprehensive data in late 2011 the panel found surprising hope for Northwest Indiana's economy, with household earnings increasing 22 percent in the last decade in the region. That is on par with the increase in the Chicago area and just 4 percent less than the growth in earnings in the Indianapolis metro area.

Check-in for the forum will be at 9 a.m., with the program running from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. A complimentary lunch is included. Registration is requested by April 24. Those wishing to register should call Paula Mathis at (219) 763-6303 ext. 184 or e-mail her at

Event sponsors include NIPSCO, the Northwest Indiana Forum, and Northwest Indiana Small Business Development Center. Event contributors include the Center for Workforce Innovations.
