INSIDE INDIANA BUSINESS: Fight for Sunday alcohol sales will continue

Supporters of an effort to allow carry-out Sunday alcohol sales and expanded cold beer sales in Indiana say they are "not deterred in the least" in their quest to persuade legislators to change "antiquated alcoholic beverage laws." On Tuesday, an interim legislative study committee voted against recommending Sunday alcohol sales and the sale of cold beer in grocery and convenience stores, agreeing with liquor store owners who say such a move will hurt their business.

Indiana business incubator opens new center

A business incubator in Fort Wayne is marking an expansion. The formal dedication for the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center's Emerging Growth Center is set this evening. President and Chief Executive Officer Karl LaPan says the new facility is for companies that have essentially outgrown a first stage business incubator. He says this project is not related to an earlier announced $10 million expansion. Construction on that initiative is scheduled to begin next year.

'Extreme Makeover' selects Miami County family

"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" has announced it will rebuild a home for Andy and Heather Cowan and their four children in Miami County. The factory workers are struggling to support their family, including their 12-year-old daughter, Kori, who is battling a congenital blood disease.

Doctors believe her development of polyps may be the result of environmental issues in the family's home, including an extreme mold infestation. The Extreme Makeover team, along with Anderson-based Hallmark Homes and hundreds of volunteers, will begin demolishing the house Thursday.

Indy-based BioStorage opens new German Facility

Indianapolis-based BioStorage Technologies Inc. is expanding its European operations with the opening of a new full-service biorepository in Frankfurt. The logistics company launched its first facility in Germany in 2007 and says the new operation will help keep up with its rapidly growing list of customers in Europe. The announcement comes on the heels of BioStorage's plans to create 125 jobs as it expands its global headquarters in Indianapolis.

ZIP code issues lead to tax reimbursement

The city of Westfield in Hamilton County says it will receive a $240,000 reimbursement from the state for wrongly distributed food and beverage tax money. The city is expecting an additional reimbursement of around $15,000 within the next month. Westfield officials say the error was due in part to confusion over ZIP codes. They say several business owners within city limits are unaware that their operations are in Westfield.

Center on Philanthropy names lead researcher

The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University has appointed Dr. Una Okonkwo Osili director of research. She has been serving in the position on an interim basis for more than a year. Osili succeeds Patrick Rooney, who is now executive director of the center.

Pence names new campaign finance director

U.S. Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., has hired a new campaign finance director. Gregg Puls has been active in the Hamilton County Republican Party and is currently president of the Fishers GOP Club. He also served as director of development for Conner Prairie Museum in Fishers.

Indiana retailer receives national honor

Indianapolis-based United Package Liquors has been honored by a national publication focusing on the alcohol retail industry. The company is one of six retailers throughout the country to be designated a 2009 Market Watch Leader. The honor is handed out each year by the editorial board of New York-based Market Watch magazine.

Finalists selected for Purdue life sciences competition

Several Indiana startups have been selected to compete for a share of $100,000 at the sixth Purdue University Life Sciences Business Plan Competition. The eight finalists will make formal business-plan presentations November 10. The first prize winner will receive $50,000 in cash and services, plus free business incubator space for a year in one of Purdue Research Park's technology centers.

Trine to host career, internship fair

Twenty-seven employers have signed up for Trine University's annual Career and Internship Fair in Angola. Companies will consider candidates for co-ops, internships and full-time jobs at Friday's event.

IU hosting conference on international relations

Indiana University will host two events this week with the goal of strengthening relations between the state and the European Union. The deputy spokesman for the European Commission Delegation to the United States will discuss the global economic crisis at a lecture Thursday at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Friday, scholars and officials will address what Indiana could learn from the European Union's regulatory policy.
