Allison Transmission Inc. says it is investing more than $130 million to make drive systems for commercial hybrid trucks at a facility that will employ nearly 100 workers. The company says it is gutting a dormant Indianapolis plant and transforming it into a high-tech facility capable of producing 20,000 propulsion systems for hybrid vehicles with pick up and delivery, shuttle and utility applications once fully operational.

Allison Transmission, Pendleton-based Remy International Inc. and Delphi Automotive Systems LLC are partnering on production of the hybrid system that is expected to be available by the end of 2013.

The Mind Trust announces new leadership

Indianapolis-based nonprofit The Mind Trust has filled two key management positions. Claire Fiddian-Green, former grants officer for the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation, has been named president. Anne Shane, formerly vice president of BioCrossroads, has been appointed vice president of strategic growth initiatives.

Goshen College picks more energy-efficient computers

Goshen College is taking another step in hope of reaching its zero carbon footprint goals. The institution says it has ordered more than 400 Apple Mac Minis to replace every campus PC. The college says the change is expected to save $8,000 per year in electricity and cooling costs. 

Parkview unveils billboard with birth announcement LED bar

Parkview Health has unveiled a unique billboard on Fort Wayne's north side. A 48-foot LED bar across the top of the sign flashes the names, weights and birth dates of Parkview newborns every six seconds. Boyden & Youngblutt Advertising & Marketing says it's the first of its kind in the Midwest.

Marcadia, Lilly reach accord on developing glucagon therapy

Carmel-based Marcadia Biotech Inc. and Eli Lilly and Co. have signed a development and exclusive license agreement for Marcadia's short-acting glucagon program to treat severe hypoglycemia. Under terms of the deal, Marcadia will oversee development of the compound through regulatory approval in the U.S., while Lilly will do the same outside the U.S. and for commercialization worldwide.

State education cuts reduce number of school librarians

The Association for Indiana Media Educators is expressing concern over the impact education funding reductions are having on school librarians. The organization says more than 80 positions have been lost at school corporations throughout the state for the upcoming academic year.

English department head is new Purdue liberal arts dean

Purdue University has appointed a new dean of its College of Liberal Arts. Irwin Weiser has been serving as interim dean since last July. Prior to that, he was head of the English department. 

Purdue appoints vice provost for undergrad academic affairs

Purdue University has named a new vice provost for undergraduate academic affairs. Dale Whittaker's appointment is effective Thursday. He currently serves as associate dean and director of academic programs in Purdue's College of Agriculture.

Eagle Pack Natural Pet Food will be rolling out new line

Massachusetts-based Eagle Pack Natural Pet Food, which has  manufacturing operations in Mishawaka, is expanding its product line and rolling out a new look to mark its 25th anniversary. The move includes the company's first line of canned dog food.

Giving Sum grant applications for nonprofits due on Friday

Friday's deadline is approaching for central Indiana nonprofits to apply for Giving Sum's 2010 grant. Each year, the organization awards a $50,000 grant to an Indianapolis nonprofit working toward change, innovation and community good. For the first time, the first runner-up will receive a grant of $12,500.

Verizon wireless grant to aid domestic violence prevention

The Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence will use a $5,000 grant from Verizon Wireless to launch a social media campaign. The organization says it hopes to reach new audiences through Twitter and Facebook. It is also using the grant for webinar prevention training sessions.
