Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has ordered spending cuts designed to save the state up to $400 million over its two-year budget cycle. The reductions come as total state tax collections for October came in $46 million lower than forecast. It is the fourth consecutive month revenues have been below projections. Daniels says all state agencies will reduce spending by at least 10 percent, reimbursements to some Medicaid providers will be reduced and state employees will not have pay increases for fiscal 2010.
Indy-based Angie's List announces expansion
Indianapolis-based Angie's List has announced it will be providing consumer reviews on custom and classic car specialists. The new division will offer service ratings in more than 100 categories. Auto restoration is the second niche service added to Angie's List in the past two years.
Earlier this year, the company added health care services with 50 categories.
Vermillion County to increase work force by 500
Defense contractor Telic Corp. plans to establish a new operation in Vermillion County creating up to 500 jobs by 2010. The company will invest more than $1.2 million for an administrative support, manufacturing and development center at the former Newport Chemical Depot. Telic Corp. has another Indiana location in Crawfordsville.
Indiana out of running for Harley facility
Inside INdiana Business has confirmed Harley-Davidson Inc. is no longer considering Shelby County for a manufacturing facility. The company has released a statement saying the list of alternatives for the current operation in York, Pennsylvania has been narrowed to a location in Kentucky. A company official says the motorcycle maker does not plan to "further explore" Indiana, or a site in Tennessee, "unless something unforeseen happens."
RV Maker recalls hundreds of workers
Middlebury-based Jayco Inc. has recalled or hired more than 200 production workers after "higher than anticipated levels of incoming orders." The RV manufacturer says its backlog is the largest in more than two years. President and Chief Operating Officer Derald Bontrager says "this is the first tangible indication that the RV industry has turned the corner and can look forward to improved business conditions going forward."
Gaming expansion approved in Ohio
Ohio voters have approved a measure allowing casinos in Cleveland, Toledo, Cincinnati and Columbus. Supporters of the initiative, including the owner of the National Basketball Association's Cleveland Cavaliers, commissioned a study suggesting the economic impact on Ohio would be around $4 billion, including the creation of approximately 40,000 full-time and part-time jobs. There is concern the competition will drive some traffic and revenue away from Indiana casinos.
Eli Lilly reducing sales force by 191
Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. plans to layoff 191 salespeople throughout the U.S. by the end of the year. In a letter to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the pharmaceutical maker says the reductions are related to a sales force restructuring.
The contracts of the affected employees were due to expire at the end of 2011, but there was some flexibility to change that date.
