The new Airport Road overpass in Gary is now open to one lane of traffic in each direction. All four lanes are expected to open by July.
The overpass was built to comply with railroad demands that there be no new at-grade crossings created by Gary/Chicago International Airport's runway expansion project. CSX and Canadian National tracks pass under the overpass.
The opening of the overpass also meant the closing of Chicago Avenue to through traffic from Cline Avenue to Airport Road. That closure will be permanent.
The new bridge was built by Superior Construction, of Gary, at a cost of $11.6 million. It was paid for by the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority as part of the airport's $166 million expansion project.
