Albert's Diamond Jewelers in Schererville are giving their hearts to people who have recently lost their jobs or homes.
Petra Azar, creator of the symbolic United Heart Jewelry line, in conjunction with Albert's, is giving away 100 sterling silver amulets Friday to those hit hardest by the dire economic times in the Chicago area, those who have lost their jobs or homes.
Albert's is joining 12 other participating jewelers from Chicago and Detroit in a Midwest Mother's Day campaign to give away the hearts, which have a retail value of $199.
"This is something I've never done before, but I wanted to do something to give back to the community, especially during these difficult times," said Albert's co-owner Josh Halpern. "It's a great concept and the minute I heard about it, I wanted to be a part of it."
Azar expressed gratitude that Albert's was taking part in the campaign ("they are good, caring people") and said the meaning behind the amulets is that the hearts of all people should come together to help those who need it.
"I really invented the United Heart for exactly what we are doing now," she said.
