Allegiant flights from Gary to Orlando will resume as planned Thursday after a six-week suspension that began in early September, according to Gary/Chicago International Airport Interim Director Steve Landry.
"There was never any doubt about this," Landry said Tuesday. "This was just a seasonal adjustment. We are already planning to capture spring break travel."
Allegiant spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler also confirmed Allegiant flights will resume Thursday.
Tickets are available for Allegiant flights from Gary to Orlando/Sanford International Airport from Thursday through April 14 at Allegiant's reservations website at www.allegiantair.com . Flights depart and arrive at Gary on Sundays and Thursdays.
A special meeting of the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority has been called for Wednesday to discuss more funding for its Allegiant marketing campaign.
Landry on Tuesday told the board of the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority at its regular meeting that Allegiant passenger boardings should result in more money for airport improvements.
That's because if 10,000 passengers board planes at Gary in any one calendar year, the airport becomes eligible for $850,000 in federal airport improvement funds. He told the RDA board it looks like Allegiant will easily board that many passengers this year.
