Five employees at ArcelorMittal's global research and design center in East Chicago received an award Wednesday for their research in developing advanced high-strength steel products.

The employees received the Institute Medal from the American Iron and Steel Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based steel industry trade group, for their work on a technical paper with employees from Honda's U.S. research and development center. Jayanth Chintamani, Gang Huang, Hong Zhu, Naveen Ramisetti and Benda Yan of ArcelorMittal were authors of "Characterization of Edge Fracture in Various Types of Advanced High Strength Steel."

Award winners were recognized at an AISI reception and dinner Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

The Institute Medal is AISI's highest technical award and was established in 1927 in memory of Elbert H. Gary and to stimulate improvement in the iron and steel and allied industries.

Improvements to the ArcelorMittal Indiana Harbor hot strip mill also were recognized with an award Oct. 23 from the Association for Iron & Steel Technology. The PRSB Descale System Redesign and Reliability Improvement Project received the 2012 AIST Reliability Achievement Silver Award.

The project helped reduce delays by 94 percent on average last year, according to a news release. The project also helped save $500,000 on energy costs and average annual savings going forward will be about $1 million. Jason Vicari, senior maintenance engineer, submitted the project.

The Association for Iron & Steel Technology is a nonprofit organization with international members for networking, education and sustainability programs for advancing iron and steel technology.
