Indianapolis Attorney Fred Glass will become the athletic director at Indiana University on January 2. The 1981 IU graduate has been officially named as successor to Rick Greenspan, who announced earlier this year that he will resign at the end of December. Indiana University President Michael McRobbie says Glass has "a well-earned reputation as someone who can get the big things done." Glass led Indianapolis' bid for the 2011 Super Bowl and also served as the president of Indianapolis' Capital Improvement Board.
Alorica bringing 150 more jobs to Terre Haute
California-based Alorica Inc plans to add 150 jobs to its customer service center in Terre Haute. The company says it has hired more than 450 employees this year and now needs more personnel. Alorica's Indiana location opened in June.
Whirlpool to cut 5,000 jobs
Whirlpool Corp. (NYSE: WHR) announced it is cutting approximately 5,000 positions by the end of 2009, but it's unclear if any of the cuts will happen at its Evansville plant. The nation's largest home appliance maker says the global credit crisis and sharp drop in demand are forcing the closure of its Jackson, Tennessee facility and the transfer of production to Findlay, Ohio. This is in addition to the four plant closures announced earlier this year. Whirlpool plans to cut approximately 500 salaried jobs throughout North America and 1,900 jobs overseas, mostly in Europe.
First Internet Bancorp posts profit drop
Indianapolis-based First Internet Bancorp is reporting a 30 percent drop in third quarter net income, compared to the same period in 2007. The company also says year to date earnings are down 42 percent. Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David Becker says economic conditions have caused consumers who have never had problems to "suddenly cease making their loan payments and turn over the collateral or file for bankruptcy."
Lilly teams with Teach For America
Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. (NYSE: LLY) and Teach For America have launched an initiative to help new teachers working in low-income areas of Indianapolis. Lilly employees will help the teachers get acclimated to the city and foster networking opportunities. Lilly Foundation President Robert Smith says the new collaboration is part of the company's effort to encourage employee volunteerism while placing a significant emphasis on educational outreach.
Education summit to focus on implementing change
School leaders from 12 Northeast Indiana counties will learn this week how to implement change into their school systems. WorkOne Northeast will hold its fourth annual Business and Education Summit Thursday in Fort Wayne called "Facing the Pace of Change."
