Chamber prepares for the 'ICE' storm

Immigration rules and regulations are changing, including proposed legislation that states that any employer who is discovered three times in five years to knowingly have employed an undocumented resident could have a business license suspended or revoked.

To help La Porte area businesses better understand their responsibility as employers, The Greater LaPorte Chamber of Commerce will offer an immigration workshop Wednesday to explain regulations that are in place.

Mike Palmer, labor and employment attorney with Barnes & Thornburg LLP's South Bend office, will be the speaker.

The workshop will take place at 8 a.m. at the Blue Heron Inn, 1110 Lakeside. Cost is $30 for members and $45 for nonmembers. To register, call the chamber (219) 362-3178.

SBA plans small business program

The U.S. Small Business Administration will conduct a program on small business financing from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Valparaiso Public Library, 103 Jefferson St.

The program aims to provide guidance to prepare small business owners for meeting with a lender. Attendees will learn how SBA is involved in the loan process, what documents to take to the lender, and how to make a good first impression with the lender. La Porte Regional Health System honored

La Porte Regional Health System recently received a 2008 Family Friendly Workplace Award from The Indiana Youth Institute in partnership with the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.

LRHS was one of five recipients in the state to receive the award for its efforts to establish family friendly policies and practices. LRHS became eligible for the honor by being previously named as one of the Best Places to Work in Indiana by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce.
