Health care rating organization HealthGrades on Monday named The Community Hospital in Munster among the top in the nation for clinical performance.
Facilities named among HealthGrades' America's 50 Best Hospitals demonstrated survival rates that are among the highest in the nation and complication rates that are among the lowest, said Samantha Collier, the organization's chief medical officer and lead author of the study.
Community was the only Indiana hospital on the 50 Best list, which also includes Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland.
"This record of outstanding care is a real credit to the hard work and dedication of the community that built this hospital," as well as to its doctors, staff and volunteers, Community Hospital Administrator Donald Fesko said in a prepared release Monday.
HealthGrades analyzed nearly 100 million hospitalization records from nearly 5,000 hospitals between 1999 and 2006 to identify top performers.
Facilities had to have demonstrated clinical outcomes among the top 5 percent in the nation in a range of 27 procedures and diagnoses, including heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, diabetic coma and others.
They also must have maintained a superior level of care during all the years studied.
The hospitals were found to have an average 27 percent lower mortality rate than all other U.S. hospitals, according to HealthGrades.
