The Gary/Chicago International Airport has scored its second positive report from regulators in the past three weeks, with a Federal Aviation Administration inspection this week resulting in "zero operation or airfield maintenance discrepancies," according to Airport Director Chris Curry.

The inspection conducted Monday and Tuesday included testing the airport's emergency response, fueling facilities and night procedures. Curry noted it came after 20 straight days of snow removal by the airport maintenance crew.

The FAA regularly inspects passenger-carrying airports that are eligible for federal funds to make sure they are meeting the agency's standards, said FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory.

She confirmed that no violations were found during the inspection conducted Monday and Tuesday.

"The airfield is safe, and they are taking care of it," she said.

Airport operations manager Kahari Velez and city of Gary Division Fire Chief Anthony McClinton were key airport managers involved in the inspection, Curry said.

The FAA inspector did make three comments about airport administration that Curry characterized as "minor."

Three weeks ago, airport finances received a clean bill of health in an audit report from State Board of Accounts, which found no material weaknesses or deficiencies in its bookkeeping and no questionable spending.

"Indeed we are off to a good start for 2010," Curry said. "As with every report there is always room to improve and we will strive to obtain a higher standard for next year."
