Emmis Publishing announces reductions
Emmis Publishing has cut jobs and salaries in an effort to better position its magazines for success. The company has reduced the publishing work force by 4.5 percent and reduced the salaries of current employees by an amount that generally equals two percent. Emmis Communications is based in Indianapolis.
Medical treatment program receives financial boost
The Indiana University School of Medicine has been awarded $2.4 million from the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation of Indianapolis. The three year grant will support the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI). CTSI is a collaboration among Indiana and Purdue universities, Clarian Health, private industry, government, BioCrossroads and other entities to implement a program that turns basic science discoveries into new medical treatments and business opportunities.
Purdue launches Web-based student aid
Purdue University has established an online tool to allow families to plan for educational costs. The Financial Aid Estimator is designed to give prospective students and parents an idea of the financial aid they could receive. Until this year, Purdue has been providing a paper questionnaire that allowed students to obtain an early aid estimate. That has been replaced by the online tool.
IDOE assistant superintendent appointed to national council
Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) Assistant Superintendent for the Center for Accreditation, Assessment and Licensing Wes Bruce has been appointed to serve on the National Technical Advisory Council (NTAC). He is one of 16 appointed by a panel of advisors formed to assist the U.S. Department of Education on complex and technical issues regarding the design and implementation of state standards, assessments and accountability systems. The council will meet at the request of the U.S. Secretary of Education and at least twice a year.
UE engineering students to visit Dominican Republic
Eleven seniors from the University of Evansville will leave next week to do engineering work in the Dominican Republic. The civil and mechanical engineering students plan to build a church, a feeding center and a sports complex. The civil engineering students will do the engineering and site plans for those jobs, while the mechanical engineering student will focus on bringing solar-generated hot water to one of the area's existing dormitories.
Stolen named Salin Bank president
Indianapolis-based Salin Bank & Trust Company has named the former president and chief executive officer of Union Federal Bank of Indianapolis as its new president and chief operating officer. Alvin (Kit) Stolen has been in bank management, leadership development and human capital consulting for more than three decades.
Big Ten Network Debuts Friday on Comcast
The wait for Comcast Corp. subscribers who are also college sports fans is just about over. The Big Ten Network is expected to debut Friday on the Comcast system in Indiana. An agreement was reached in June that ended more than a year of negotiations between the cable television provider and conference sports channel. Comcast is the largest cable provider in Indiana with more than 800,000 subscribers.
