Valparaiso University says its MBA program will be one of the first in the country to offer a concentration in sustainability. The MBA Plus Certificate will add classes focused on sustainability to its regular coursework beginning this fall. Valpo says it will be the third university to offer the new concentration in the U.S.
EnerDel to Double Size of Indiana Headquarters
Indianapolis-based EnerDel Inc. says $118.5 million in federal stimulus money will enable it to immediately launch plans to double the size of its headquarters on the northeast side of the city. The grant, which was announced as part of President Barack Obama's visit to Elkhart County today, will have an immediate impact on EnerDel's plans to become a major manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles. Ener1 Inc. Chief Executive Officer Charles Gassenheimer tells Inside INdiana Business "we plan to grow from 150 jobs today to 3,000 jobs or more by 2015." EnerDel is also in the process of selecting a site for a second, much larger manufacturing operation, targeting a Brownfield site in Indiana. Gassenheimer says a decision will be made before the end of the year.
Indiana to Get $416 Million For Batteries, Electric Vehicles
President Obama has identified six Indiana companies and one university to receive a total of $416 million in federal grants to accelerate the manufacturing and deployment of electric vehicles, batteries and components. EnerDel Inc., Delphi Automotive Systems LLC, Allison Transmission Inc., Remy Inc., Magna E-Car Systems of America Inc., Navistar Inc. and Purdue University are all recipients. The entities are part of the president's announcement in Wakarusa today that 48 new advanced battery and electric drive projects will receive $2.4 billion in funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Nonprofit Receives $1 Million Boost For Older Workers
Lafayette-based nonprofit Tecumseh Area Partnership (TAP) Inc. has received a $1 million grant from the U. S. Department of Labor to expand work force development services for workers ages 55 and older. Officials say the funding will help prepare more than 300 Hoosiers with the skill sets required of the region's high-growth, high demand jobs. It also supports the establishment of Career Transition Hubs within the region's two WorkOne Centers. TAP is one of 10 recipients nationwide to receive the Older Worker Demonstration Grant.
Fort Wayne Foundry Workers Eligible For Assistance
The U.S. Department of Labor has announced more than 200 workers at Fort Wayne Foundry Corp. in Fort Wayne are qualified for Trade Adjustment Assistance. The help gives laid off workers an opportunity to apply for employment-related services to aid them in landing new jobs. The Fort Wayne workers are among almost 2,000 auto-related industry employees made eligible for the assistance this week by the federal government.
Lugar and Ivy Tech Partner For Skills Summit
Job seekers or those interested in making a career change are invited to a free skills summit in Evansville. Ivy Tech Community College Southwest and Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) will host the August 12 event featuring resume reviews, mock interviews and training sessions. Members of the Regional Indiana Energy Consortium Board will also be available to discuss high-paying jobs in the energy industry and what types of training and financial assistance are available.
Lilly Changes Patient Program Eligibility
Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. (NYSE: LLY) has changed income eligibility requirements for its most widely used patient assistance program. Lilly USA says it's part on an effort to help people deal with the high cost of prescriptions during a down economy. The new yearly eligibility limit for a family of two is approximately $44,000. Lilly has also announced its recently approved blood-thinner Effient is now available at pharmacies throughout the U.S.
Irwin Financial Q2 Loss Narrows
Columbus-based Irwin Financial Corp. (NYSE: IFC) is reporting a second quarter loss of $57 million, compared to a loss of $107 million for the same period a year ago. The company attributes the continuing loss to weak credit for some borrowers and restructuring costs. Chief Executive Officer Will Miller says the only step left in the restructuring effort is raising additional capital.
Kimball Post Q4, Full Year Results
Jasper-based Kimball International Inc. (Nasdaq: KBALB) is reporting fiscal fourth quarter income from continuing operations of $2.8 million, compared to a loss of $9.8 million for the same period a year earlier.
For all of fiscal 2009, the company posted income from continuing operations of $17.3 million, including a nearly $19 million after-tax gain from the sale of undeveloped land holdings and timberland.
Nonprofit Formed to Help Local Entrepreneurs
A nonprofit organization has been established in Hamilton County to provide assistance to area entrepreneurs. The Entrepreneurship Advancement Center (EAC) will work with the county's secondary schools to introduce entrepreneurship to students. It will also serve as a resource center and coordinate efforts between existing organizations.
Former Indy Mayor Appointed to Advisory Board
KeyBank in Central Indiana has named former Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson to its advisory board. He is currently vice president of corporate affairs and communications with Eli Lilly and Co. (NYSE: LLY).
New Dean Announced For IUPUC
The dean of the College of Business and Management at Saginaw Valley State University has been named as vice chancellor and dean of Indiana University Purdue University Columbus. Marwan Wafa is expected to begin his new duties in September, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees.
ATHENA Nominees Announced in SW Indiana
Eleven women have been nominated for the 2009 ATHENA Award in southwest Indiana. The program honors women who demonstrate leadership, professional excellence and community service. The Chamber of Commerce of Southwest Indiana will present this year's award October 22 at The Centre in Evansville.
