Valparaiso University and Concordia College-New York are partnering to create a Center for Global and Professional Studies. Both campuses will offer programs in business, media/communications, law, nursing, social sciences and the humanities. The launch of the first joint programs is targeted for summer of 2010.
Indiana casinos closely monitor Ohio vote
Residents in Ohio are being asked to approve casino projects in Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo and Columbus. A recent report from Indiana's Legislative Services Agency suggests the number of people going to casinos in the southeast part of Indiana could drop by as much as 38 percent if the gaming venues are approved in Ohio.
Revised Web site to provide state alcohol information
The Indiana Association of Beverage Retailers has revised a Web site to provide information on state alcohol policies. The IABR says the Project RAD (http://www.projectrad.com) site outlines how strictly the alcohol sales industry is regulated in Indiana. The updated Web site follows a recommendation from a legislative study committee against expanded alcohol sales.
Brake maker closing Cass County plant
A brake manufacturer has informed the state it is closing a plant in Logansport. The decision by the Carlisle Industrial Brake and Friction Division of Motion Control Industries Inc. is expected to result in 118 workers losing their jobs. The majority of production is expected to be wrapped up by December 23.
Oklahoma company pulling jobs out of Indiana
Autoquip Corp. is shutting down its operation in Greensburg and moving 47 jobs to Oklahoma. A company spokesman says some of the managers at American Lifts in Greensburg will be given the chance to transfer to the company's headquarters. Autoquip manufactures lift tables and custom material handling equipment.
Indiana company expands in India
Indianapolis-based Closure Systems International Inc. (CSI) is planning a second facility to serve the emerging market of India. The beverage closure company plans to open a plant near Bangalore and begin production early next year. CSI says the facility will be its 31st plant.
Construction to begin on Advanced Manufacturing Center
A ground breaking ceremony will be held Friday for the Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence facility just east of the Columbus Learning Center. AMCE will provide certification and degree programs and work force training for Ivy Tech Community College, Purdue College of Technology, Indiana University-Purdue University Columbus and southeast Indiana high schools. The facility will be built and equipped using $15 million in grant funds from Lilly Endowment Inc.
More workers eligible for federal assistance
Employees from Indiana Mills and Manufacturing Inc., including on-site leased workers from NOVA/LINK D.S.A. Rivercross in Westfield, are eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). The Indiana Department of Workforce Development says the designation applies to workers laid off on or after August 7, 2008. The employees produced motor vehicle seating.
