HR managers group hosts discussion

The Northwest Indiana Chapter of the Society of Human Resource Managers will host a breakfast and panel discussion from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Avalon Manor, 3550 U.S. 30.

This will be a facilitated panel discussion revolving around current issues affecting the workplace.

Cost of this event is $15 for members or $20 at the door. For this event only, guests may attend for free. Those who bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the Northwest Indiana Food Bank will be entered into a drawing.

Life Science Lunch Series scheduled

Barnes & Thornburg LLP's next Life Science Lunch Series seminar, "Indiana CTSI (Clinical and Translational Science Initiative)," is set for 10:30 a.m. to noon locally Tuesday. A live video feed of the presentation will be broadcast at the Purdue Technology Center, 9800 Connecticut Drive, Merrillville.

Speakers will explore how Indiana universities and corporate partners work together to create an environment that facilitates clinical and translational science research.

The lunch series is offered free and is open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

Ivy Tech Community College will host a free town hall meeting for small businesses, "How to Survive and Thrive in This Challenging Economy," at 5 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Valparaiso campus, 3100 Ivy Tech Drive.

In a question-and-answer format, business owners and managers will have the opportunity to voice their concerns and ask questions on a wide range of business related issues. The panel includes:

• Financial planner Cliff Malings
