The city of Gary is preparing to put the first major projects of the historic Marquette Park restoration out to bid by the end of this month.

The city is hosting two contractor forums next week for firms interested in bidding on the projects. The forums will be at 5 p.m. Monday and 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Marquette Park Recreation Pavilion, 1 N. Grand Blvd.

There will be information on the capital improvement projects, the contracting process and bid schedule at the meeting.

The Marquette Park restoration is a $32.5 million project, with $28.2 million of that being provided by a grant from the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority.

In a news release issued this week, the Planning Department did not release a list of specific projects to be advertised for bid this month. But there are 11 major items to be completed in phase two of the project over the next two years, according to information on the Planning Department's website.

Some projects listed as being included in the upcoming phase of work at the park are the recreation pavilion, aquatorium, children's playground, Lake Street Beach, armory, lagoon, beach parking/special event area, infrastructure, natural areas, and the shoreline and beach.

The Father Marquette statue was restored in October by Conservation Solutions. The complete restoration of the 241-acre park is slated to be finished by 2012.
