BP said all gasoline shipped from its Whiting Refinery and its network of storage terminals meets quality specifications and is authorized for sale, according to a news release issued Monday.

But as a precaution, the company said it continues to test and confirm the quality of shipments made to retail sites in three states following its fuel recall last week. Sites thought to have received off-specification fuel have been told to not sell the fuel until it is tested or replaced, the company said.

Last week, BP identified that at least 2.1 million gallons of fuel would have to be taken out of the market as a result of having a higher-than-normal volume of polymeric residue. BP said the off-specification fuel could cause a range of vehicle problems and alerted the public to file claims as a result of the off-specification fuel supplied to gas stations in the past two weeks.

Of more than 6,500 claims BP has processed, Indiana residents filed 62 percent of claims and Illinois residents filed 30 percent of them. The remaining share of people are from Wisconsin or outside of the three-state area but bought fuel within the region.

The company said it has received about 19,000 inquiries about the matter. BP said it is working to accelerate the claims process and has added more phone operators and claims adjusters to serve people.

People who bought off-specification fuel and want to file a claim should call (800) 599-9040 to speak with a claims representative. Online inquiries can be submitted at www.bpresponse.com.
