CALUMET CITY | The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. said Monday it will close its Carson Pirie Scott store in River Oaks Center in January after the store's lease expires.
The closing will affect 75 workers, according to a news release. The store was one of the mall's anchor tenants.
Bon-Ton Stores President and CEO Brendan Hoffman said the decision for closure was made following an ongoing performance review of the company's assets.
"We are very grateful for the devoted River Oaks store associates and are committed to providing assistance to these associates," Hoffman said.
Employees at the River Oaks location will be offered the opportunity to interview for positions available at other Carson Pirie Scott stores or receive career transition benefits, including severance, according to established practices and state employment service support, the company said in a statement.
The company acquired the leasehold interests in the mall store as part of the Northern Department Store Group purchase in 2006.
The closest Carson Pirie Scott store to the Calumet City location is less than three miles away in Hammond at Woodmar Mall.
Bon-Ton Stores has corporate headquarters in York, Pa. and Milwaukee and operates 272 department stores under several nameplates including Carson's.
Simon Property Group owns River Oaks Center.
