Tax credits are available for people interested in making contributions to the Center of Workforce Innovations to help defray the costs of providing local adult education services.

Through the end of this year, $3,650 of Neighborhood Assistance Program tax credits are available for individuals and companies to help support 13 Adult Education Learning Centers across Lake, Jasper, Porter, Pulaski and Starke counties.

The Center of Workforce Innovations, a Valparaiso-based nonprofit organization, oversees the operations of the centers and is regional operator of Indiana's WorkOne program.

The tax credits are provided for donations of at least $100, allowing donors to receive 50 percent of their total donation through the state of Indiana.

Between 2010 and 2014, about 3,600 Northwest Indiana residents who dropped out of school are expected to enter adulthood.

About $219,700 in federal funding has been cut from the Center of Workforce Innovations to run the centers, which the organization said served 800 adult students with basic education, GED preparation and English as a second language classes.

The Neighborhood Assistance Program offers $2.5 million in tax credits annually as an incentive to help nonprofit organizations boost contributions from individuals and businesses for certain neighborhood-based programs and projects.

People interested in obtaining tax credits, which are available on a first-come, first-served can call the Center of Workforce Innovations at (219) 462-2940.
