CALUMET CITY | Black is the new black, at least for a thriving company that makes the color for everything from lipstick to office supplies.

Plastic Color Corp. is expanding and adding jobs because of a greater demand for black colorants in packaging, pipe and fiber. The Calumet City-based company is adding 40,000 square feet onto its manufacturing plant to increase capacity by 40 percent.

"We've been running three shifts at Cal City since March," said President Doug Borgsdorf. "Due to a rapid expansion in our black production business, we've recently gone to a seven-day-a-week schedule to meet customer demand, increasing our capacity by 18 percent this December."

The company is expanding on its Paxton Avenue plant for the first time since 1981, and adding at least one multi-function production line. Plastic Color Corp. will add seven to 10 more workers, including an operations manager who will work in a senior leadership position.

"This expansion is part of a corporate strategy to grow our black capacity in Illinois while our facilities in North Carolina, California and China focus on liquid color, color concentrate and specialty solutions such as our new antimicrobials, flame retardants and anti-counterfeiting products," Borgsdorf said.

Plastics Color Corp plans to break ground on the construction project as soon as weather allows, corporate operations manager Wes Woldt said. The new line should be operational by late 2014.

The company also recently expanded in North Carolina, and is ramping up production in California and China.

"Our business is growing in every area as we continually find ways to solve our customers' challenges," Borgsdorf said. "We are also exploring several opportunities in Latin America, with a partnership or acquisition in Brazil at the top of our list."

Plastic Color Corp. is an international provider of colorants for a sweeping range of markets that include pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, consumer goods, electronics, medical, and food and beverage. Its colors can be used in virtually every type of material and manufacturing process.
