A Times columnist who hosts a local radio show is changing his format, and the new way may help him reach a broader audience.

F. Marc Ruiz, who writes a financial column called Your Mind On Money for The Times, will continue a show on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore, the local public radio station. Rather than a weekly hour-long program, he will record an hour each month, with that broadcast being divided into 6- to 8-minute time slots.

"We're going to be doing a digest format," he said. "We might have guests. We'll talk about the column."

Segments will be integrated twice a week in the National Public Radio shows "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered," he said.

Ruiz, a registered investment professional of SII Investments and wealth advisor with Oak Partners in Crown Point, has hosted an hour-long show on 89.1 FM every Monday for almost five years.

He described the new format as "an audio version" of his Times column.

His goal is for the segments to be included in the Public Radio Exchange (PRX), which would expand his audience to other public radio across the country.

"Once we get good enough at it, we hope to get it on PRX and other stations pick it up," he said.

Ruiz will continue to broadcast out of the Merrillville station.

"I didn't want the relationship to end, but I didn't want to do an hour a week anymore," he said.

Ruiz is taking off May, and the new format will be broadcast starting in June.

"I think it will be nice to have a pre-recorded, professionally produced piece," he said.

It previously was a live format, he said.

Ruiz has worked for 21 years with Oak Partners. He grew up in Hobart and lives in Valparaiso.
