The changes in signage are nearly complete and by next week most Wiseway and PayLow grocery stores will be transformed into Strack & Van Til and UltraFoods markets.

Strack & Van Til announced plans in late November to buy seven WiseWay and PayLow locations from WiseWay Supermarkets. WiseWay stores will become Strack & Van Til stores and PayLow locations will be converted into Ultra Foods stores.

The WiseWay store in Winfield and the WiseGuys Discount Liquors chain will remain unchanged.

Strack & Van Til President David Wilkinson said the PayLow Foods at 6001 Broadway and the Ultra Foods at 6110 Broadway – located diagonally across the street from one another in Merrillville – could have presented a challenge in the sale but an expiring lease agreement solved the problem.

"Right now, we're remodeling the PayLow and we're going to move the Ultra store across the street into that building," Wilkinson said. "We're going to close our (existing Ultra) store and give it back to the landlord."

Wilkinson said the lease on the Ultra store it currently operates at the southwest corner of the intersection is set to expire in May.

"It works out really well," he said.

Work is taking place inside the other stores and is expected to be complete as early as next week.

Wilkinson said grand re-openings may be scheduled for sometime in the spring.
