GARY | Lake County and Gary police apprehended a man Wednesday night who attempted to evade authorities after allegedly stealing a gold Ford Thunderbird.
Joshua Kirkland, 21, of Gary, was being held Thursday at the Lake County Jail as police petitioned the Lake County prosecutor's office to file automobile theft charges, according to a news release from the Lake County Sheriff's Department.
While Lake County police Detective James Stahl was in the area of the Borman Expressway and Broadway about 8:30 p.m., he observed a vehicle heading north on Broadway that Gary police said was stolen from 45th Avenue and Broadway.
After attempting to stop the Thunderbird when Stahl noticed a traffic infraction, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop and the driver, who police identified as Kirkland, and a passenger fled the car on foot.
Stahl began to pursue the pair with his emergency vehicle, but later gave chase on foot.
Gary police Sgt. Brian Camadeca and Cpl. John Artibey, who also had a K-9, arrived to assist Stahl and they helped locate Kirkland near 24th Avenue and Adams Street, police said.
