Dollar General opens in Gary

A Dollar General store opened in Gary.

Dollar General has opened a new store at 4157 Cleveland St. in Gary's Glen Park neighborhood.

It is Dollar General's second store in Gary and 21st in Lake County.

“Dollar General is committed to delivering a pleasant shopping experience that includes a convenient location, a wide assortment of merchandise and great prices on quality products,” said Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development. “We hope our area customers will enjoy shopping at Dollar General’s new location.”

The Tennessee-based dollar store chain carries an array of food, housewares, cleaning supplies, basic apparel, seasonal items and health and beauty products. Its stores typically employ six to 10 people.

Its national rivals Family Dollar and Dollar Tree also each have several locations in Gary. Dollar stores, which carry many generic private label items and cater toward lower-income and frugal customers, have been one of the fastest growing retail concepts across the country since the Great Recession.

The new Dollar General is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, visit 219-884-9340.
