More new retail is coming to south Munster, which has seen a boom in new development along Calumet Avenue in recent years.

Developers plan to build two new strip malls by the CVS Pharmacy at Calumet Avenue and Main Street. An Anytime Fitness gym will be located in a strip mall on Main Street that will have room for one additional tenant, Munster Planning Director Tom Vander Woude said.

And the town's second Dunkin Donuts will be located along Calumet Avenue just north of CVS. Town officials talked the developer, the owners of the Dunkin Donuts franchises in Merrillville and in Munster just north of Ridge Road, into building a full strip mall instead of just a standalone doughnut shop with a drive-through.

"They're under construction," Vander Woude said. "The anticipated opening is in the spring."

Massachusetts-based Dunkin’ Donuts, which is considering a rebrand to just Dunkin' since most of its revenue comes from coffee and it's trying to reposition itself in the consumer's mind as more of a coffee shop, has more than 11,300 restaurants worldwide and a well-established presence in the Region. The chain has 28 locations in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, including recently opened locations in Hammond and Hobart.

Anytime Fitness has 14 locations in Northwest Indiana, but none in Munster. The Minnesota-based chain operates more than 3,000 fitness clubs across the nation, which are known for being accessible to members 24/7.

While Anytime Fitness gyms keep regular hours, members get key cards that allow them to open the gyms after-hours and work out at any time they choose.
