DXL opens new store in Merrillville

Casual Male by the Southlake Mall rebranded itself as DXL and moved into a new building.

Casual Male XL in Hobart is no more; now comes DXL Men's Apparel.

The big-and-tall menswear store Casual Male closed its longtime location across from Southlake Mall at 2217A E. 80th Ave. in the Merrillville Plaza shopping center, which is actually in Hobart because of an annexation during the 1970s.

It was rebranded as DXL and moved a half mile west on U.S. 30 in a new location at 1580 E. 81st Ave., Building 2 in Southlake Pointe, across the municipal border in Merrillville. It's located next to the new Outback Steakhouse, which also relocated a short distance into the newer shopping center that includes Ashley Homestore, American Sale and La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries.

DXL is a specialty retailer owned by suburban Boston-based Destination XL Group that caters to larger men, carrying clothing sizes of XL and up. It stocks pants with waist sizes of 38 or more and shoes of at least size 10.

The company is in the process of rebranding all its Casual Male stores as DXL.

"The transformation to the Destination XL concept provides the company with an exciting opportunity for growth," David Levin, president and CEO, said in a press release. "We are confident that this transformation will accelerate our long-term sales and profitability."

The store carries more than 100 brands, including Polo Ralph Lauren, Levi's and Kenneth Cole. It also carries sportswear in big and tall sizes from brands including Under Armour and Reebok.

DXL in Merrillville is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call 219-769-5154.
