FAIR OAKS | A grand opening celebration dubbed "Hogust 5" for Fair Oaks Farms' new Pig Adventure is slated for Monday.
The event, which will feature tours, children's activities and presentations by Fair Oaks Farms' executives and local elected officials, marks the official kick off for the agritourism destination's latest project.
The Pig Adventure, which took 15 months to construct, is a joint venture between Fair Oaks Farms and Belstra Milling Company.
Buses powered by a mix of cow and pig manure take visitors from the popular Dairy Adventure at Fair Oaks Farms to the pig production facility just to the north on Interstate 65.
The 120,000-square-foot building houses both the pig production facility and a second-floor enclosed, climate-controlled, interactive viewing area for visitors.
Inside, some 2,400 pigs are either pregnant or soon will be via artificial insemination. Tourists see sows in labor and newborn piglets as well.
"Fair Oaks Farms is extremely excited to add an additional opportunity for our visitors to view another example of 21st Century agriculture," said Gary Corbett, CEO of Fair Oaks Farms. "Fair Oaks Farms serves as an educational resource regarding current and future farming practices and a center for dialogue between the consumers of food products and the farmers who produce them."
