The Northwest Indiana Federation will hold a meeting Saturday at Zion Progressive Cathedral to build support for an agreement to hire Gary residents for Gary/Chicago International Airport's $166 million expansion project.

The meeting also will feature a call to action to fight Senate Bill 585, which in its original form would have ended the Gary mayor's majority control of the airport authority, according to the interfaith group.

The meeting will run from 2 to 4 p.m. at the cathedral, which is located at 1169 Connecticut St.

The Northwest Indiana Federation has has been negotiating for more than a year with the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority to boost hiring of Gary residents on the airport expansion project. The RDA is a major financial backer of the project.
