A local group received a federal grant to develop training materials for the management of hazardous chemicals in the workplace.

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded $105,325 to the Construction Advancement Foundation of Northwest Indiana Inc. in Portage.

Overall, the federal agency awarded $10.1 million to 70 organizations through the Susan Harwood Training Grant Program. Recipients included nonprofits, employer associations, labor unions, joint labor and management groups, colleges, universities, and community and faith-based organizations

The program extends one-year grants that pay for education programs aimed at teaching workers and employers about workplace safety, health hazards and injury prevention measures.

"These grants reflect the department's commitment to ensuring all workers and employers have the tools and skills to identify hazards and prevent injuries," said Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez. "By further advancing a culture of workplace safety and health, we help to eliminate the false choice between enhancing workplace safety and productivity."
